WORLD FIRST: ALL 3 6-WHEELER F1 CARS GATHERING AT GOODWOOD FoS 2012

Next week’s Festival of Speed (28 June -1 July) will see a unique gathering of unusual British Formula 1 machines, as for the first time ever, anywhere in the world, three infamous cars with 18 wheels between them come together at Goodwood.

The six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, March 2-4-0 and Williams FW08B have never been gathered together before, so the chance to see all three six-wheelers line-up in the paddocks at the Festival of Speed will be an exceptional one, not to be missed by any motor racing enthusiast.

Tyrrell raced the celebrated P34 six-wheeler in 1976 and 1977, with four wheels at the front. Fellow British Formula 1 teams March and Williams also built experimental six-wheeled cars, but with four wheels at the rear for increased traction. The March 2-4-0 - of similar vintage to the Tyrrell - will be making its Goodwood debut.

Like the March 2-4-0, the 1982 Williams FW08B had four rear wheels. It was designed for reduced drag, increased grip and improved ground effects, and was based on the conventional four-wheeled FW08. It was tested once and set lap records, with its unusual set-up providing huge grip and acceleration. In 1983 new F1 regulations banned six-wheeled cars, as well as four-wheel-drive, putting an end to the development of the six-wheeled experiments such as the Williams and March.

The six-wheeled F1 cars will be joined by more than 300 other vehicles at Goodwood.

ADRIAN NEWEY WINS MOTORSPORT AWARD

Adrian Newey was presented with the MIA's most prestigious personal Award by Damon Hill during their annual Summer Reception at the House of Lords hosted by Lord Drayson. Newey took the MIA Award for the Most Outstanding Personal Contribution to the Motorsport Industry, following his exceptional success over the past 30 years.

Newey joins a highly-impressive list of previous MIA Award winners, including Harvey Postlethwaite, Ross Brawn OBE, Sir Frank Williams CBE, Sir Stirling Moss OBE, Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, Tom Wheatcroft and Bernie Ecclestone, among others.

Newey is widely regarded as one of the greatest engineers in motorsport history, being the only designer to win the Formula One Constructors Championship with three different F1 teams. As Technical Director of Red Bull Racing, he designed their 2010 championship-winning car, the RB6, and is enjoying his 2011 RB7 design dominating the field once again.

In 1980 - straight from Southampton University - he joined Fittipaldi under Harvey Postlethwaite, then March, where he had his first taste of success in the USA, designing IMSA GTP winners and Indy cars. His 85C chassis won the Indy 500 and took the CART title.

In 1990, he joined Williams F1, and - with Patrick Head - was instrumental in making F1 champions of Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Alain Prost. He moved to McLaren F1 to do the same for Mika Hakkinen.

Since 2006, Adrian has brought success to Red Bull Racing, with last year's fabulous double world championship win.

He races for enjoyment in his GT40, Jaguar E-Type and Ginetta G50, and more seriously in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He was presented with his own Red Bull RB5 as a reward for his achievements with the team.

Thanks to Lord March once again for allowing automotive enthusiasts to descend upon the Goodwood estate for a weekend of petrolhead heaven at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Highlights this year included a central theme which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Jaguar E-type. We recorded an interview with E-type authority, Peter Crespin to mark the event. We were also very fortunate to grab a short interview with F1 legend Adrian Newey. Adrian recently provided the foreword for forthcoming Veloce book Race & Trackday Driving Techniques. The author, David Hornsey actually taught Adrian some basic principles of developing skills as a trackday driver. Adrian, more renowned for his development of F1 cars than driving, was happy to give the short interview in the Red Bull garage just after he completed his run up the famous hillclimb.

In just ten days time the annual UK National Motorsport Week (25 June-3 July) gets underway, celebrating Britain’s dominant role in global motor racing with a week of activities culminating at the 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed (30 June-3 July) - the world’s greatest celebration of motor sport and car culture, where almost every motor sport discipline is honoured and can be seen in action.

The 2011 National Motorsport Week is an exciting partnership between the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA), the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and Goodwood, with this annual event being switched to an earlier date in high summer to incorporate the Festival of Speed.

The UK remains the world leader of motor sport on all fronts, and to help illustrate the point, Goodwood will have the last four British-born Formula One World Champions - Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell, in action on the challenging 1.16-mile Festival hillclimb.

FORMULA ONE IS COMING HOME AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED

In just under two weeks, the calm tranquility of the picturesque Goodwood Park will be shattered as the 2010 Festival of Speed gets underway. From 2-4 July more than 90 stars drivers and riders, and over 350 significant competition vehicles, will be in action at the world’s greatest celebration of motoring culture. A key attraction will be the contemporary Formula 1 teams and drivers, as well as a mouth-watering display of the greatest F1 cars from the past 60 years of the F1 World Championship.

Goodwood’s unique ability to attract the top works Formula 1 teams is a key strength of the Festival of Speed – nowhere else in the world can you get so close to the latest and greatest F1 cars and drivers. This year six F1 teams have confirmed their attendance at the Festival, just one week ahead of their appearance at the British Grand Prix.

Scuderia Ferrari – the incomparable Italian marque will be at the Festival once more, their blood red cars forming a central part of this year’s ‘Viva Veloce!’ celebration.
McLaren-Mercedes – the MP4-23 will be in action all weekend, with 2008 and 2009 World Champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button at the controls. They will also both be driving the ex-Alain Prost championship winning 1986 McLaren-TAG MP4/2C.
Mercedes GP – one the newest F1 teams in the pit lane will mark its return to full works competition after a 55-year absence with an appearance at the Festival of Speed, with Nico Rosberg in action, as well as Goodwood hillclimb speed record holder Nick Heidfeld.
Red Bull – after setting the pace through the early part of the 2010 F1 season, Red Bull are amongst the favourites this year, and their car is sure to be a Festival highlight, especially with Mark Webber at the wheel. Red Bull’s engineering genius Adrian Newey will also be appearing in the 2009 Red Bull-Renault RB5.
Lotus-Cosworth – after a long absence in F1, Lotus makes a welcome return and will be at Goodwood with drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen.
Williams-Cosworth – the latest FW32, which will appear at the Festival, renews Williams’ relationship with Cosworth, with whom it won four World Titles in the 1980s.
The 60th anniversary of the Formula One World Championship will be celebrated at Goodwood with paddocks full of important Grand Prix cars from the last six decades. Cars from the 1950s will include the championship-winning Alfa Romeo Tipo 159 ‘Alfetta’, Mercedes-Benz W196, Vanwall, and BRM’s first winner, the Type 25. Highlights from the 1960s include the Cooper-Climax T53 ‘lowline’, Lotus-BRM 33, Lotus-Cosworth 49 and Matra-Cosworth MS80.

Be-winged Grand Prix cars of the 1970s include the Lotus-Cosworth 72E, due to be driven by Emerson Fittipaldi and Heikki Kovalainen and the legendary six-wheeled Tyrrell-Cosworth P34. Highlights from the ground-effect and turbo Grand Prix eras will include the Lotus-Cosworth 79, Williams-Cosworth FW08 – the last car to win the World Championship powered by a Ford-Cosworth DFV engine, and due to be driven by Karun Chandhok at Goodwood, plus the Toleman-Hart T183B in which Ayrton Senna mad his GP debut.

Post-Turbo Grand Prix car will include the Benetton-Ford B192, Bruno Senna at the wheel of his uncle Ayrton’s 1993 McLaren-Cosworth MP4/8, the 1994 Lotus-Mugen 109, 1996 Williams-Renault FW18 and Jordon-Ford EJ13.

Look out in the paddock too for familiar Formula 1 faces, including as Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill, Christian Horner and Murray Walker.

GOODWOOD CONFIRMS OVER 20 WORLD CHAMPIONS AND 80 DRIVERS AND RIDERS APPEARING AT THE 2010 FESTIVAL OF SPEED

With just over six weeks still to go until the 2010 Festival of Speed blasts into life (2-4 July), Goodwood can already confirm more than 80 star drivers and riders will be present at the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture, including over 20 World Champions who between them have collected more than 70 championship titles.

Reigning Formula One World Champion Jenson Button will be in action up the famous Goodwood hillclimb, as will his McLaren team mate and 2008 World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Joining the McLaren drivers will be fellow 2010 season F1 competitors Mark Webber behind the wheel of his Red Bull, Nico Rosberg in action in his Mercedes, and Bruno Senna, driving his uncle Ayrton’s iconic McLaren MP4/8.

Past F1 champions and Grand Prix winners present at the Festival of Speed are set to include Emerson Fittipaldi, Sir Jackie Stewart, Mika Hakkinen, John Surtees, Sir Stirling Moss, Jochen Mass and Patrick Tambay. Joining these confirmed drivers at Goodwood will be a roll-call of other motor sport stars that reads like a who’s who of motor racing.


From the world of rallying, Festival first-timer Miki Biasion will be reunited with a Lancia Delta; American ‘Gymkhana’ video and current WRC star Ken Block will be going wild in his Ford: 2009 IRS Champion Kris Meeke will be going sideways in his Peugeot; as will IRC rival Guy Wilks in his Skoda. Many other rallying greats will be reacquainted with the cars that made them famous, including Messrs Rauno Aaltonen, Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes, Björn Waldegård and Markko Martin.

Motorcycling heroes will include Giacomo Agostini, Kevin Schwantz, Chaz Davies, Neil Hodgson and Trevor Nation, plus many others, including 12-time Trials Champion and Goodwood legend Dougie Lampkin. Motor racing legends from across the Pond will include double Daytona 500 winner and NASCAR stalwart Michael Waltrip and three-time Indy 500 victor Bobby Unser.

THE TOLEMAN STORY – DELIVERED TO BRUNO SENNA

We're very excited to learn that Ted Toleman has personally delivered a copy of The Toleman Story – Last Romantics in Formula 1 to Ayrton Senna's nephew, Hispania F1 Racing driver Bruno Senna, at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

With Toleman offering the great Ayrton Senna his Formula 1 debut drive in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix – where he finished an amazing 2nd - it was fitting that his nephew Bruno be presented a copy of this fantastic read by Toleman himself – who is present this week to run his single-make MINI Challenge series.

Bruno Senna showed much gratitude that Toleman took the time to personally deliver this piece of history to him and was delighted by the prospect of the read and perhaps discovering some new tales of his uncle in Formula 1.

The HRT F1 driver is currently at point in his career where is late Uncle was when Toleman brought him into the sport. It was clear today the presentation of the book was an emotional moment and one he will take with him through his racing career.

RENAULT REMAINS IN F1

Renault has decided to maintain its commitment to Formula One and welcomes the perspective of a strategic partnership with Genii Capital; a Luxemburg-based firm specialising in new technologies, brand management and motor sport.
Following the proposed sale of a large stake of Renault F1 Team to Genii, both partners will operate the team together. The letter of intent signed by the two companies should be concluded in early 2010.

In 2010, Renault F1 Team will retain its name, its identity and the core ingredients that led to the successes achieved in 2005 and 2006. The team will continue to be supplied with engines by its sister company in Viry-Châtillon, Paris, which is also pleased to have received a renewed commitment from Red Bull Racing for the 2010 season.

After 35 years in the sport, Renault today announces a new phase for its F1 programme, consistent with Formula One's drive for cost efficiencies. Formula One remains one of the biggest sporting spectacles in terms of annual television audiences and media exposure. Therefore, Renault believes that the impact of Formula One in terms of image, and brand awareness worldwide, particularly in new, emerging markets, will continue to play a key role in fulfilling the company's growth objectives in years ahead.

Bernard Rey, Renault F1 Team President, said: "I am delighted to welcome Genii Capital as our new strategic partner as I am sure that their enthusiasm and business expertise will create a new dynamic for the team, the staff, and our partners. Altogether, we look forward to competing again at the highest level in Formula One. The important cost reduction measures, made possible by the collective work within FOTA, have already improved significantly the operating cost base. With the anticipated sale of a stake in its F1 operational base at Enstone to Genii Capital, Renault achieves today another step that will definitely bring F1 participation to an affordable level for the Group. In addition, the new partnership will contribute to procuring the team the resources to compete sustainably at the highest level, and creates a great opportunity to modernise its governance.
